Mark Sedwill has had an exceptionally distinguished career as a British diplomat and senior civil servant. He was British ambassador to Afghanistan and NATO’s Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan, before being appointed permanent secretary of the Home Office and subsequently the UK’s National Security Adviser and Cabinet Secretary. He was knighted in 2017 and ennobled in 2021
