Former UK Government Cabinet Secretary and National Security Adviser
Mark is a former UK Government Cabinet Secretary and National Security Adviser. He is a crossbench peer and a member of the UK parliament’s Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy. He is also a non-executive director of Rothschild, and the chair of the bank’s geopolitical advisory and Saudi Arabia units. He also chairs the International Institute for Strategic Studies and the Atlantic Future Forum. He is a trustee of St Andrews University, and of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, a volunteer maritime search-and-rescue charity. Mark had a long and distinguished career in the diplomatic and security fields. He chaired the 2021 G7 Panel of Global Economic Resilience, and was the British ambassador and NATO representative in Afghanistan (2009-11) and the permanent secretary at the UK Home Office (2013-17). He is also a fellow of the Royal Geographic Society and the Institute of Directors.
